Werkflow collaborated with esteemed fashion designer Gareth Pugh and artist Goshka Macuga to create a virtual interactive piece based on their collaboration for Antigona - an opera written by Tommaso Traetta in 1772 and being restaged in 2017 for Documenta festival, Kassel.
This was the perfect collaboration for Werkflow as we are huge fans of Gareth and Goshka, so to see them come together on this project has been really exciting. As a studio, we like to see how far we can push unconventional ideas using emergent digital technology. We often discuss the use of the 'game space' as a theatrical space, so the concept of reframing Antigona against a futurist backdrop seemed to us like a perfect opportunity to work toward taking Gareth and Goshka's ideas beyond what is possible on stage.
Web streaming has come a long way and being able to publish visually provocative interactive content opens up a world of possibilities. The main idea behind our collaboration on this project was to develop an interactive partner piece to the opera that could explore the structural beauty of the design. It was important that this experience could be accessible both on a phone and a desktop, and that the balance of interactivity and design would bring people back for repeated viewings in which they may discover new things.
